[ WEEK THREE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the beach comes back to life. Birds are back to cawing, the fish splash in the ocean, and insects buzz cheerfully from the jungle. Crabs skitter across the sand and seagulls fight over food (possibly yours). It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Chief stands at the front of the longhouse and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the hut-like building behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, everyone. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to head in. The other Chief helpfully pipes up with a, "Make sure to bring a snack, and maybe some water. Hydration is key to catching murderers!" The longhouse is set up like a meeting hall, with long benches on each wall, facing each other. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. Aside from that, the room is empty. It’s only when everyone has taken a seat that the doors close and the Chief speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. That part might just be coincidental, but it's pretty creepy, right? Who knows what this means.

[...] Then again, if we believe Ruby's dead...that's also three corpses.

...but if she was dead, wouldn't they just... say so? They've never had a problem saying people were dead before.

They seem to think it's funny, actually.

If she's not dead already, that probably means she's going to be dead soon. I still stand by my point. Three people who died or disappeared on a Thursday. Three different killers, too, if we go with the idea that Ruby's disappearance is the responsibility of another role.

[Yona's eyes light up.]

If she isn't dead yet, but might be soon, that might mean Zuko is safe. They said he's not her partner anymore - so the partner rule won't apply to him... right?

...not that I want her to be dead, but-!

I don't either, but it could be exactly why Zuko's safe for now, yeah. It still leaves him without a partner for now and a little more vulnerable, but it's possible.

[cuedoves]

I doubt it's that easy. But we'll see.

[grumps, captain cynical isn't convinced he's out of the woods yet]

Ruby was missing from Wednesday night. I had my hands full after some idiots wandered into the jungle [CALLOUT POST FOR THOSE NINE], but I didn't see her. I looked for her most of Thursday.

...then that kind of settles the debate about how many roles are involved, doesn't it? How else would they get Ruby out without any of us noticing? And if kills are only done on Thursdays then why act on a Wednesday?

[cuedoves]

I don't know. But I doubt it was part of a killing role. I think it's either a separate role - like Magilou suggested - or... something else. Maybe something outside of the game.

[zerotohiro]

If it's outside of the game that's even worse because then we have no idea how to get her back. I guess we won't know until...unless she shows up again.

Maybe she's still alive.

[he doesn't think it's likely but Hiro can probably tell, that as socially awkward as Zuko is, he's concerned]

I hope so. The Chief seems to want to keep you alive so...maybe that's why. [Poor Zuko?] Maybe she's just being kept somewhere else but alive. Like a partner time-out or something.

I'll try to contain my gratitude. [HE SAYS, SO SARCASTICALLY....]

Yeah, maybe. [he doesn't sound convinced, though]
