The beach is quiet, eerily so. All animals, all insect noise, all gusts of wind have come to a complete stop this morning. The only sound is that of the ocean, but even that seems muted. Everything is hushed and as the doors of the huts opens, the only sensation that rings utterly true today is this: One of your own is gone. And now, as the rules state, it is your job to discover their fate. Welcome to the investigation post! If your character decides to search an area, please post the name of the location in your header and wait for the mod replies. Anything to discover or not to will be indicated during the course of the thread. After the body is discovered, an announcement will be made and characters are free to spend the rest of the afternoons how they like. [ It's going to take them a while to find anything because it's a fairly big beach but when they do...!

They'll see some markings in the sand. Take a closer look? ]

He'll follow after Vriska to check out the markings, too! ]

[Yeah forget about troll business, what's going on there?]

[ there's a little design in the sand! it looks oddly like a... chessboard? there are some shells and rocks on the board representing the two sides and it's set in a pattern for anyone who might recognize it.

next to it is a set of two footprints, one set approaching the board and then two sets walking away from the board towards the jungle. ]

.... uh. Anyone here play chess?

[ Looks like she knows what that is, at least.

Vriska will crouch down in the sand trying to make heads or tails of this nonsense. She can't really interpret the board, because wtf?, but the footprints interest her. ]

... someone waiting here drew this, was met by another person, and then they both headed into the jungle ...? That's my best guess. [ Glances up at Hayner and Battler with a confused frown and a shrug. ]

[ Looking at the board and the pieces. ]

Maybe they played a round?

[ But it looks like it wasn't a finished game? ]

Do you think the chiefs want the pieces?

That's, ah... which one was it? The Schliemann Gambit?

[Scratching his chin as he inspects the board.]

If I remember correctly, it's an okay opening for black, but not a really great one.

Wait, you understand this?

[ Vriska will stand, folding her arms and frowning sharply. ]

Who the hells goes to all the trouble of drawing a chessboard in the sand, and then using a weak opening? And why did the two of them head off into the jungle together?

[ Clapping Battler on the back. Good job, dude. ]

Maybe we'll find something if we follow the footsteps?

[ Puzzling out the chess or WHY anyone would do a move like that is above him. Just going go ahead to see if he can find anything else. ]

Wait, what do you mean you didn't know? How is that a surprise?!

Well, you don't exactly look it, [ Vriska will say with a sudden grin, clapping Battler on the back.

ANYWAY OFF THEY GO! Following the footsteps. Anything to find at the end of the yellow brick road? ]

[ Nope, not so much! Once they hit the jungle, the footsteps stop but they can probably see Mera and Jacopo in the distance.

What? Fuck this. [ ... did you want to find something, vriska???? well. maybe an answer for the whole chess thing would have been nice. ]

Let's blow this joint. Battler, think you can remember that chessboard setup or should one of us get paper and a pen and draw it or something?

We'd probably be better off writing it down or something, just in case.

[He'll probably remember it, but it won't hurt to make sure.]

And I guess we can collect the pieces for the Chiefs or whatever.

I can ask my partner about it. He might know more.

Going to head back to guard the pieces though until they can get it down. He's thankful for no bodies or blood this time. ]
