[ WEEK THREE – INVESTIGATION ]

INVESTIGATION

The beach is quiet, eerily so. All animals, all insect noise, all gusts of wind have come to a complete stop this morning. The only sound is that of the ocean, but even that seems muted. Everything is hushed and as the doors of the huts opens, the only sensation that rings utterly true today is this:

One of your own is gone.

And now, as the rules state, it is your job to discover their fate.

[Yeah, he's. Flinching away from that, but it's not with ill intent.

Either way, without much intonation:]

Focus on tomorrow. [Not him.]

[ there's a pause, and she has to blink back some tears, but when she answers her voice is firm. ]

[He nods.]

Then I know you'll try to do what's right.

[With his good hand, Lief reaches out to place a hand on Keith's shoulder. There's... nothing that can make this better, but...]

[Sorry, Lief. He knows he means well, but he's still flinching away from the contact.]

[... That's fair. Lief pulls away, then.]

[Sorry, corpse hunting bro...]

... Focus on tomorrow's trial. I get the feeling everyone will have their hands full.

[He nods. It's not surprising that Keith would prefer to focus on this.]

[and she lets him go with nothing but a stare that bears into his back as he leaves-- for now, anyway]

[Yeah, that's another look cast his way. This...is definitely not good, is it.]

[It's most definitely not. Go cast a look at someone else, though.]

[This is. This is not fine.

Yona has no idea what to say to him, but she shuffles over, just in case.]

[It is fine, shh.

Even if Yona doesn't say anything, Keith lets her stand nearby for a moment before he speaks up.]

Tomorrow— Everyone needs to work together. Don't fight between yourselves.

[it's not fine!!]

...we will. We'll do our best. [...] I promise, Keith.

[A nod, far too small.]

I know you will, Yona.

Can...

[Her voice is also small.]

...can I come find you later? I don't know what to say now, but...

[She wants to do something for him. Tomorrow, they'll do their best at the trial. Tonight? She wants to make sure he's not alone.]
