[ WEEK FIVE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the beach comes back to life. Birds are back to cawing, the fish splash in the ocean, and insects buzz cheerfully from the jungle. Crabs skitter across the sand and seagulls fight over food (possibly yours). It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial.

The Chief stands at the front of the longhouse and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the hut-like building behind him and very clearly state --

"Trial time, everyone. Get in here and figure out who did it."

And then he'll turn to head in. The other Chief helpfully pipes up with a, "Make sure to bring a snack, and maybe some water. Hydration is key to catching murderers!"

The longhouse is set up like a meeting hall, with long benches on each wall, facing each other. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. Aside from that, the room is empty. It’s only when everyone has taken a seat that the doors close and the Chief speaks.

"Well, have at it. You've got till nine."

And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck.

What if the guilty party is the one we need to get us home? Should we just risk outing and killing them for the sake of getting it "right" this time?

[he doesn't know if that's what happened, he has no way of knowing who is carrying out the kills—but another siren is dead and that probably isn't coincidental, he thinks.]

I'm not saying we call it quits, I'm saying we use the time we have as a group to find the best solution we can instead of dicking around for a conclusion we've never been able to properly come to.

... Jack Vessalius suggested, in the third week, that the Wickies may have to kill the Sirens. If we assume that the remaining Wickie was aware of Fie's role, it may be unwise to find her killer, at least.

[yep, this is basically the same conclusion he's made based on what they know. let's not live up to our island's namesake by doing something extra stupid here.]

Which is strange, because I had assumed she was killed by a Siren. If we do find the time to focus on who killed who, perhaps her death is the one to which we should pay the most attention.

....she went to see Nanashi and never came back. [So. There's that.]

[arches a brow, arms folded]

Well! That's something to keep in mind. Maybe questioning Nanashi should be added to our "to-do" list.

It'd be my first thought, too. She went to see him because she was worried about him. But like I said, she never came back so I thought...I don't know, maybe she spent the night.

How close were Nanashi and Yona? I confess, I've only spoken to each of them a few times.

Close enough, I think? They talked a bunch but I don't really know the extent of their relationship or anything.

[He was being rather quiet for the moment, but with a little grumble... Nanashi finally speaks up.]

Um, well... I can confirm that she did come to see me and that's what I was hopin' she'd do. But in the end, she ran off before anything happened.

[!!!]

Were you going to kiss her? Was love about to blossom on this island?? Oho, how beautiful it is for romance to grow even in the midst of tragedy!

[stop her]

[FUN RUINER!!]

[she pouts, but links her hands behind her head and shuts up]

[SCREAMING THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS.]

WE'RE HERE TO FIND A PERP! NOT PLAY OUT A SHOUJO FANTASY!!

[rubs his ears a little. please stop yelling, nanashi??]

I know. Don't worry about her. [he'll keep magilou in line when she starts doing. this.]

So stop yelling so much.

Aw, sheesh! You guys are all so drab and boring! A girl can't even have a little fun in an attempt to lift the moody mood?!

And you let her go? Did she say if she was going anywhere else? [...] And what do you mean you were hoping? You asked her?

[He's just crossing his arms.]

She didn't say anything. What she wanted to tell me was about how the messages decoded here had mentioned that we're all in a dream.

Now bring up question two.
