TRIAL

In the morning, the beach comes back to life. Birds are back to cawing, the fish splash in the ocean, and insects buzz cheerfully from the jungle. Crabs skitter across the sand and seagulls fight over food (possibly yours). It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial.

The Chief stands at the front of the longhouse and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the hut-like building behind him and very clearly state --

"Trial time, everyone. Get in here and figure out who did it."

And then he'll turn to head in. The other Chief helpfully pipes up with a, "Make sure to bring a snack, and maybe some water. Hydration is key to catching murderers!"

The longhouse is set up like a meeting hall, with long benches on each wall, facing each other. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. Aside from that, the room is empty. It’s only when everyone has taken a seat that the doors close and the Chief speaks.

"Well, have at it. You've got till nine."

And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck.

The final Siren claimed there to be one. [Sorry said Siren, he figures it's not really a secret anymore???] I cannot say more than that, in part because I do not know any more than that.

...a weird question, but humor me for a sec? What exactly did the last Siren say to you?

That their refusal to say much about the game was not out of principle or a desire to be frustrating, but that they simply cannot. That our job, in the trial, is to determine the final mystery of the game.

... And you are behaving a bit oddly, Hiro.

Well that's weirdly vague...[But he just gives off a crooked smile.]

You were the one who called your own question "weird", were you not?

Because there seems to be a lot of uncertainty about what does and doesn't matter in this trial. [Like people suggesting it's not even important to try and suss out the killers, for instance.] So yeah. Guess some people might find the question weird or unhelpful.

Is that really what it is?

[...he just gives Lief a defeated look.]

The way that's worded... it might not meant to be taken that literally.

And how would you interpret it, Katara?

There are a couple of ways you probably can. The way you did, like there is an actual final mystery after we figure out everything else.

Or it could just be us figuring out the ending in general. It's not specific enough to go either way, unless we're given more context.

It is possible. I do not know if the Siren was aware of what information I do or do not already have, so that complicates things as well.

But I am curious on what exactly the ending entails, I admit. As are many of us who do not already know, perhaps through a role.

Perhaps. That is a possibility that cannot be ruled out.

[Though Lief is not salty, so he wonders.]

At this point I'm not sure why we're all dancing around naming her. It's a bit obvious.

[Because he promised to keep it a secret so he's not going to just say it even if it's obvious????]

[ she made no such promise, but she will just pat lief on the shoulder. ]

[He sighs. Thanks, Katara, you're a pal.]

I'm saying we can't just--

[oh wait, Lief is agreeing with him]
