TRIAL

In the morning, the beach comes back to life. Birds are back to cawing, the fish splash in the ocean, and insects buzz cheerfully from the jungle. Crabs skitter across the sand and seagulls fight over food (possibly yours). It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial.

The Chief stands at the front of the longhouse and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the hut-like building behind him and very clearly state --

"Trial time, everyone. Get in here and figure out who did it."

And then he'll turn to head in. The other Chief helpfully pipes up with a, "Make sure to bring a snack, and maybe some water. Hydration is key to catching murderers!"

The longhouse is set up like a meeting hall, with long benches on each wall, facing each other. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. Aside from that, the room is empty. It’s only when everyone has taken a seat that the doors close and the Chief speaks.

"Well, have at it. You've got till nine."

And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck.

[And because of a short conversation, he finally chimes in.]

I'm not in favor, because Lief is firm about Lucina killing Fie, and Vriska told me yesterday that she's the one who killed Yona. And we know what happened to Jinah. So...pick a new question.

... Indeed. If Vriska is Princess Yona's killer, then there is no need.

[A small nod.]

I'm sorry, Lief. I didn't want to mention it without making sure it'd be accepted. [Despite everything, he still wants to minimize the damage and that includes keeping Vriska calm and aware of what's going on.]

Are you sure she wasn't lying? The Chief did say Yona was an independent kill.

He said technically. That technically can change things completely.

[nonchalantly]

I suppose. . . that is fair.

Well! That leaves our Wickie and the rest of us in a bit of a pickle, doesn't it?

[ quirks a brow at her. ]

And you're a Siren, aren't you? If you killed Yona, then wouldn't the Chief clarify that it was a Siren kill?

Or. . . can Sirens also technically commit independent kills?

[ Vriska frowns sharply, somewhat annoyed. ]

I can't confirm that. Think it through, Magilou.

[having dealt with Lucina being unable to answer certain questions, Magilou doesn't press]

Of course. Though in all honesty, the detective life was never one for me.

Well, you're one of the only people in this room with half a brain, so looks like you're it!

[she grins]

Heeey, I'm not the kind of person who says no to praise!

Ask them. [He looks up then, tired and exhausted from the possibilities. He's been quietly running through the questions all trial.]

Ask if the Sirens both agreed to murdering Yona. I know what Fie told me, and I would like to think she'd warn me about something like this.

That is one of those "after six" questions, I believe—I asked something along those lines earlier.

Good point. Katara also pointed out that yeah, they said technically. Technicalities are always going to be one of those funny things to throw a wrench in plans.

[He nods.]

And we know the Chiefs are fond of their word games.

Exactly. So after six, we can ask. But let's not waste a question just yet on something like this.

Besides, they're more likely to confirm and answer if we're already on the right track.

I'm fine with putting it on hold for now then.

[A nod.]

Anything else you think we should add for after six, Katara?

... how vital is it for a Wickie to reach the end of the game?

[ she quickly adds, before someone jumps her. ]

I'm not saying we execute Lucina. But Magilou said that the Chiefs were implying we had to catch a killer this trial. But I asked them a few trials ago if just figuring out the identity of the killer still counted as much as voting for them, and Hal told me no.

So if we wait until after six to ask if the Sirens really did vote to kill Yona and to ask why Prussia didn't die. . .

What other questions are there left for us to ask for our final round of two truths and a lie?

Confirm what happens if we execute the Wickie? Ask if we have to vote for a killer to ensure the best ending of the game?

"What will happen if we execute the Wickie?"

And "What ending will we get if we do not vote for a killer this week", maybe.

"Ask if we have to vote for a killer to ensure the best ending of the game. What ending will we get if we do not vote for a killer this week." The Chief told me, when I asked something similar, that he was still deciding. That may be a worthless question.

I suppose we could ask about what might happen if we execute the Wickie, but I obviously am not in favor of that! And not just because I don't want to die too, obviously.
